Middlebury Ends Bowdoin's Season in NESCAC Softball Tournament

Box Score

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Bowdoin College softball team saw its season come to an end Saturday as they bowed to Middlebury, 2-0, in an elimination game at the NESCAC Tournament hosted by Williams.

The Polar Bears finish their year with a record of 24-14 while the Panthers advance to play in another elimination game on Saturday afternoon and improve to 19-15.

Middlebury took advantage of some Bowdoin miscues to score both of its runs in the fifth inning. After Carlyn Vachow reached on an error, Kelsey Martel ripped a single to right that got past the Polar Bear defense and allowed Vachow to come all away around from first for a 1-0 lead. One batter later, Alex Scibetta hit a ground ball that brought home Martel to make it 2-0.

That proved to be all Middlebury pitcher Elizabeth Morris would need, as the Panther hurler allowed just two hits and struck out 12 Bowdoin batters in the win. She carried a no-hitter into the seventh, when Emily Griffin and Hannah Wurgaft singled to put the tying runners on base. But Morris whiffed Alana Luzzio to seal the win.

Griffin pitched well for the Polar Bears, permitting just three hits and no earned runs while striking out five in the tough-luck loss.
