Box Score 2 BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin softball team rounded out their regular season slate with a two-game sweep of visiting UMaine-Farmington on Tuesday afternoon.
The Polar Bears (24-12) combined dominant pitching and a high powered offense to down the Beavers (14-12) 8-2 in the opening game and 6-0 in a chilly nightcap.
Cielle Collins got Bowdoin started with a RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on a bases loaded opportunity. The Beavers looked to break through in their following at bat with runners on second and third with only one out, but Julia Geaumont battled back for consecutive strikeouts to close the inning. Back to back doubles in the bottom of the third put Bowdoin on top 2-0 after Nicole Nelson drove Emily Griffin in from second. Collins tacked on another RBI for the team's fifth straight hit of the inning, followed by a two run double to center from Siena Mitman. Adriane Krul and Nelson added to the Polar Bears' run total with a RBI each in the bottom of the fifth. The Beavers put a pair of runs on the board in the sixth as Kennadi Grover doubled to right and Jillian Withee single to the same spot. Mitman closed out the game for Bowdoin with a solo shot to straightaway center. With just three outs separating the Polar Bears from the win, Emily Griffin stepped in to fan all three batters she faced.
Geaumont started the day for Bowdoin, completing two innings of work with two strikeouts and as many hits. Alana Luzzio stepped in for four innings in the circle, earning five K's while allowing four hits and no walks. Griffin rounded out Bowdoin's pitching trifecta with the three K seventh. Courtney Fowler pitched six innings for the Beavers, allowing 18 hits and eight runs with one strikeout.
Bowdoin got its first run of the second game on the board in the opening inning off a sacrifice fly by Nicole Nelson. A big fourth inning put three more runs up for Bowdoin, beginning with a two run single off the bat of Luzzio. Krul later fouled out deep in left field, allowing Collins to tag up and advance home. The Polar Bears offense continued to produce in the fifth as Katie Gately collected an RBI double. Gately eventually came around to score as Marisa O'Toole flied out to center.
Griffin pitched three innings for Bowdoin, collecting one strikeout while allowing two walks and three hits. Melissa DellaTorre finished out the game by allowing three hits while fanning seven. Kristen Manzo pitched six innings for the Beavers with seven hits and three earned runs. The freshman hurler walked four and earned one strikeout.
Bowdoin will travel to Williams on Friday afternoon for the opening game of the NESCAC Championship Tournament. The Ephs and Polar Bears faceoff at 2:30 PM.
