Box Score 2 BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University softball team swept Bowdoin in a pair of one-run decisions Friday afternoon.
The Polar Bears drop their second consecutive doubleheader and fall to 16-10 on the season. The Eagles improve to 17-7 with 6-5 and 7-6 wins.
Husson took an early lead in the opening game, scoring on a passed ball in the first inning. The Polar Bears took control in the top of the fourth off an RBI double from Katie Gately followed by a single from Nicole Nelson that allowed another run to score. The Eagles tied the game in fifth off a groundout to short, with Bowdoin once again taking the lead in the sixth. Cielle Collins put the ball in play for a single, which was mishandled by the defense, allowing a pair of runs to come across. Collins eventually came around to score off a throwing error on a stolen base attempt by Dimitria Spathakis.
The Eagles would take the lead once more with a four run sixth, coming off three singles and a double. Bowdoin stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in their last at-bat and were unable to extend the game, falling 6-5.
Despite putting runs on the board in five out of seven innings, the Polar Bears couldn't hold off the Eagles in game two. Marisa O'Toole opened the scoring with an RBI double down the left field line and came around to score on a single by Julia Geaumont. Husson got on the board with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning. Gately added a solo shot to left center in the top of the third, to put Bowdoin ahead 3-1 with Emily Griffin putting the ball in play for another run in the top of the fourth. Husson tallied two runs in the bottom half of that inning, and evened the score in their following at bat, as Lyndsey Merrill singled to drive home a run. Bowdoin took the lead once again with runs in the sixth and seventh innings off RBI singles by Griffin and O'Toole. With a two run lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, Bowdoin allowed two RBI singles and a double as the Eagles completed the sweep.
Bowdoin returns to Brunswick for a doubleheader against Brandeis tomorrow afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m.
