Softball Stumbles as Jumbos Sweep Sunday Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Bowdoin softball team dropped a pair of low-scoring games to defending national champion Tufts on Sunday afternoon.

The Jumbos shutout Bowdoin 4-0 in the opening game of the day's doubleheader, taking a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning off a homer by Jo Clair. The Polar Bears and Jumbos were deadlocked at 1-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning in their second game, but Tufts pushed a pair of runs across the plate to sweep the doubleheader. Bowdoin drops to 16-8 (5-3 NESCAC) while the Jumbos collect their 30th consecutive NESCAC East victory (21-3, 5-0 NESCAC).

Emily Griffin gave up just two hits in game one, with one being the three-run blast from Clair in the opening inning. Tufts manufactured its fourth run after Bri Keenan led off with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and took both third and home on a pair of groundouts.  Tufts' Allyson Fournier held the Polar Bears hitless through five innings, but Bowdoin loaded the bases with consecutive singles by Adriane Krul, Griffin, and Nicole Nelson in the sixth. Fournier worked her way out of the jam with two strikeouts to escape the inning.

Fournier ended the game with eight strikeouts and two walks, while allowing just three hits in seven innings of work. Griffin allowed a pair of hits with four walks and struck out three.

The Jumbos scored an unearned run in the first to open the second game of the series, with Bowdoin evening the score later in the fourth. Hanna Wurgaft started the inning with a leadoff single, advancing to second off a sacrifice bunt from Cielle Collins, and scored on a pair of wild pitches. Wurgaft's run snapped 26 shutout innings for the Jumbos. With the score tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Summer Horowitz hit a one-out single. Michelle Cooprider followed up with a double to left-center which put runners on second and third. When Sara Hedlter slapped a ball to short, Bowdoin made the play at the plate but the throw got away allowing both baserunners to score.

Bowdoin out-hit Tufts again in the second game, 8-6. Both teams would leave 10 runners on base, with the Polar Bears stranding a runner on third twice.  DellaTorre pitched six innings for Bowdoin, allowing just one earned run off six hits. The senior pitcher struck out three and walked a pair. Lauren Giglio allowed eight hits in seven innings with nine strikeouts. Griffin and Wurgaft were both 3-for-4 pacing the Bowdoin bats in game two.

Bowdoin will host St. Joseph's in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
