Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The Bowdoin softball team swept a pair of Rhode Island teams in its second day of Florida play.
The Polar Bears improve to 3-1 after defeating Salve Regina 11-6 and Rhode Island College 7-5 in Thursday's action.
The Polar Bears opened the day against Salve Regina with Melissa DellaTorre on the mound. Turning in a complete-game performance, the senior allowed six runs off as many hits, while tallying ten strikeouts. Bowdoin mustered 15 hits off the Seahawks, including a five-run sixth inning. Salve Regina put together back-to-back one run innings to open the game, before Bowdoin would erase the deficit in the bottom of the second. An error and RBI single by Adriane Krul put the Polar Bears back in the game. Bowdoin would never trail the Seahawks again, receiving extra base hits from Katie Gately, Dimitria Spathakis, Marissa O'Toole, and Krul. A five-run sixth inning was all Bowdoin needed to close out Salve Regina, behind a two-run triple by Spathakis, an RBI single from Nicole Nelson, and two-run double by Krul.
Bowdoin capitalized on an early error by Rhode Island College to come away with its second victory of the day. Hanna Wurgaft reached base three times for Bowdoin, including a homer in the first and single in the fifth. The Polar Bears opened with a four runs in the top of the first inning, after a leadoff triple by O'Toole. Bowdoin tacked on one more run in the second and two in the fourth to hold off the Anchormen. Emily Griffin earned the win with a full game showing, allowing just three hits while striking out six batters.
Tomorrow is Bowdoin's third consecutive doubleheader with games against Stevenson (9:00 a.m.) and Monmouth (12:00 p.m.)
