BRUNSWICK, Maine - Williams College maintained its lead following day two of the 2014 New England Small College Athletic Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championship Saturday at Greason Pool on the campus of Bowdoin College.
The defending champion Ephs (1288.5 points) will enter the final day with a 92.5 point lead over second-place Amherst (1196 points). Connecticut College is also within striking distance in third place with 1136 points following two days of competition.
Sam Gill of Connecticut College was the top performer on Saturday, earning a pair of individual wins and contributing the Camels' third relay victory of the championship. Gill collected the 100 butterfly in a pool-record time of 48.75 and followed it up with a win in the 100 backstroke in a time of 48.99. He also anchored the winning 200 medley relay team that also included Michael Fothergill, Kirk Czelewicz, Loring Bowen in a NESCAC-record time of 1:30.38.
Williams held its overall lead thank to a trio of titles. Chris Gronbeck set a meet and pool record with a time of 9:18.03 in the 1000 freestyle. Jake Tamposi established a new meet and pool record as well in the 100 breaststroke (55.98) while Timothy Lattimer won the 400 medley in 3:57.81.
Amherst earned the final two wins of the day, with Connor Sholtis having a hand in both. Sholtis claimed the 200 freestyle in 1:39.10 and then anchored the winning 800 freestyle relay team that included Jeff Anderson, Nick Egan and Parker Moody in a time of 6:46.14.
