BRUNSWICK, Maine - Defending champion Williams College holds the lead following day one of the 2014 New England Small College Athletic Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championship hosted by Bowdoin College.
On a record-setting first day at Greason Pool, the Ephs totaled 636.5 points to lead closest pursuers Amherst (607) and Connecticut College (566).
Middlebury's Ian MacKay owned the top individual performances of the day, setting a conference record and winning two titles. MacKay established a new NESCAC and pool record in the preliminaries of the 50 butterfly (21.89) before claiming the crown in the evening session with a time of 22.01. He also repeated as the conference champion in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.80.
Jake Tamposi got Williams started in the evening session with a win in the 50 breaststroke, posting a pool-record time of 25.59. Benjamin Lin also set a meet record in the 50 backstroke, winning for the Ephs in 22.70. Thad Ricotta won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:28.46 and Nathaniel Boley claimed the 200 IM with a time of 1:50.24 to round out the Williams winners on day one.
Johann Schmidt of Tufts handily won the one-meter diving competition with a pool-record tally of 578.15.
In the team events, Connecticut College came away with a pair of victories. The Camels set a new NESCAC and pool record with a time of 1:21.57 to win the 200 freestyle relay, courtesy of Patrick McGinnis, Michael Fothergill, Drew Andre, Sam Gill. Gill, Kirk Czelewicz, Loring Bowen and Drew combined to close the session with a win in the 400 medley relay in a NESCAC and pool-record time of 3:18.70.
