BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's rugby team cruised to a 51-5 win over Colorado College in the opening round of the American Collegiate Rugby Association/USA Rugby Division II Tournament on Sunday at Pickard Field.
With the win, the Polar Bears (9-0) advance to the regionals next weekend to be held at Dartmouth College. Bowdoin will face Rutgers next Saturday in the second round of the tournament.
On Sunday, Bowdoin jumped ahead and never looked back, scoring six first half tries to quickly put the contest out of reach. Sparked by Charlotte Kleiman's downfield runs, Bowdoin got two tries apiece from Randi London, Pamela Zabala and Vianney Gomezgil Yaspik. Hayleigh Kein scored the final try of the period and London converted three kicks for a 36-point halftime lead.
It was more of the same in the second half as Samantha Hoegle, Addison Carvajal and Emily Athanas-Linden each added a try. Carvajal's try was one of the highlights of the day, as Athanas-Linden placed a high kick downfield. Carvajal scooped the ball on a high bounce and raced into the try zone for the score. Colorado College was able to get on the scoreboard with less than five minutes remaining to close out the 51-5 final.
In addition to the balanced offensive attack, Bowdoin got strong defensive efforts from Georgia Bolduc, LeShauna Phinazee, Sophie Meyers, Cammie Ogden-Fung and London.
More information about next weekend's regional will be available on Monday.
