Jewett Propels Polar Bears To NESCAC Quarterfinal Victory Over Middlebury

MEDFORD, Mass. - Christy Jewett put home a match-high 22 kills to lead the Bowdoin College women's volleyball team to a 3-1 win (25-18, 18-25, 25-22, 25-23) over Middlebury College on Friday evening in the NESCAC Quarterfinals at Tufts University.

The fifth-seeded Polar Bears (21-7) advance to the NESCAC semifinals for the fourth consecutive season and avenge a regular-season loss to the Panthers. Bowdoin will play top-seeded Tufts on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the first semifinal match. Second-seeded Williams and third-seeded Amherst will play in the second semifinal at 3:30 p.m.

Middlebury sees its season come to an end with a mark of 12-12.

Jewett had 13 digs to go along with her 22 kills for the Polar Bears. Katie Doherty racked up 25 digs for Bowdoin, who also got 16 digs from Michelle Albright. Erika Sklaver had 13 kills while Quincy Leech (27 assists) and Clare McInerney (20 assists) split setting duties for the Polar Bears.

Middlebury was led by 11 kills apiece from Becca Raffel and Alice Roberts. Hannah Blackburn recorded 33 assists for the Panthers, while Olivia Kolodka totaled a team-best 16 digs. Melanie English put home nine kills for Middlebury and also had five blocks.

Tied at 15-all in the opening set, Bowdoin closed on a 10-2 run, sparked by a pair of Jewett aces. Sklaver put home the final two points of the set to give Bowdoin a 25-18 victory. In the second set, Middlebury sprinted to a 6-0 lead in the early going. Bowdoin was able to close to 17-16 before a 6-0 Panther surge, led by three kills from Alice Roberts, and claimed a 25-18 win to even the match at one set apiece.

The squads traded blows in the critical third set, as Bowdoin jumped to a 7-1 lead only to see Middlebury reply with a 8-1 run to deadlock the score. With the teams tied at 22 apiece late in the set, Bowdoin got kills from Jewett and Dana Williams to help seal the 25-22 win.

Bowdoin took command in the fourth, jumping to another early lead, only to see Middlebury storm back with a late rally to tie the set at 23 apiece. Jewett finished off the Panthers with consecutive kills to vault the Polar Bears into the semifinals.

Saturday's semifinal between Bowdoin and Tufts will be the second meeting of the season between the teams. The Polar Bears defeated the Jumbos, 3-0, in a match held at Bowdoin on September 20. Bowdoin improves to 2-1 in NESCAC Tournament play against Middlebury.
