CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Bowdoin College men's and women's swimming and diving teams split against MIT and Babson on Saturday in the season-opening meet of the 2014-15 campaign.
The Polar Bear men defeated Babson (187-88) and fell to MIT (196-93). The women's team also beat Babson (191-75) and lost to MIT (198-93).
In the women's meet, Bowdoin claimed a pair of first-place finishes. Sophomore Holly Rudel won the 100 backstroke (1:00.42) while Caroline Watt, in her first collegiate meet, won the 500 freestyle (5:20.66). Tom Kramer won two events for the Bowdoin men, taking both the one-meter (264.80) and three-meter (299.45) diving competitions.
Bowdoin also had several runner-up finishes as well on Saturday. Watt took second in the 1000 freestyle (10:49.70) while Erin Houlihan was runner-up in the 500 freestyle (5:26.90). Mariah Reading took a second-place showing in the 100 butterfly (1:01.98) while Sage Mikami took the silver in the one-meter dive (208.25).
For the Bowdoin men, John Lagasse took second place in the 100 breaststroke (58.84) while William Shi was runner-up in the 50 freestyle (21.29).
The Polar Bears will return to MIT the first weekend in December in their next competition, the MIT Invitational on December 5-7.
