Miller's Overtime Game-Winner Lifts Bowdoin Into NCAA Second Round

Box Score

WALTHAM, Mass. — Bowdoin College junior Hunter Miller scored a golden goal on a terrific individual effort in the 96th minute as the Polar Bears advanced past the College at Brockport, 3-2, in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament Saturday evening at Brandeis University.

With the win, Bowdoin (10-6-3) advances to the second round of the tournament to face host Brandeis tomorrow at 5 p.m. for the right to move on to the Round of 16. Brockport's season comes to a close with a record of 17-6-1.

Brockport opened the scoring early, when leading scorer Peter DiLorenzo knocked home a cross from Collin Goettel on the game's first shot at the 4:07 mark. Bowdoin equalized in the 41st minute, when Andrew Jones fed Thomas Henshall just inside the box. Henshall's hard shot deflected off a Brockport defender and inside the near right post to knot the game at 1-1.

In the second half, the Golden Eagles jumped in front in the 59th minute when Goettel's corner kick went directly into the net after a misplay by the goalkeeper. Not to be outdone, Bowdoin scored on a corner kick of their own 11 minutes later when Nabil Odulate headed home Sam Ward's service.

Brockport had a chance to go back ahead in regulation, when DiLorenzo's header off another corner in the 86th minute hit the crossbar. The Golden Eagles also put a late free kick on net that was stopped by Bowdoin's Stevie Van Siclen.

The Golden Eagles controlled much of the first five minutes of overtime, but a counter attack by Miller proved to be the difference. He carried the ball from midfield, split several defenders, then found the lower-right 90 to make his first goal of the season a game-winner and send the Polar Bears through.

The match was as even as the final score indicated. Shots were 13-12 in favor of Brockport. The Golden Eagles also owned a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Shots on goal were four aside, but Van Siclen's two saves to one for Brockport's Casey Sullivan made the difference.

The victory was Bowdoin's first NCAA Tournament win since 2010.
