LEWISTON, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's rugby team remained unbeaten and unscored upon this season, defeating Bates 51-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The Polar Bears (4-0) will return to action next Saturday at Colby at 10:00 a.m.
On Sunday, the Polar Bears dominated the Bobcats in possession, territory and points. Opening the scoring for Bowdoin, Le'Shauna Phinazee had a strong 10 meter carry into the end zone. Randi London added a strong running try of her own moments later, and converted the kick after for a 12-0 lead. The Polar Bears balanced their attack with strong runs upfield by Vianney Gomezgil Yaspik and London. The backline fed off the quick ball afforded by their strikes, leading to five-point tries by Charlotte Kleiman, Lizi Mills, Samantha Hoegle and another by London to take a 32-0 lead at halftime.
Bates countered in the second half with a series of running and kicking plays, but the Bowdoin defense, with good tackles from Alice Kim, Maddie Lemal-Brown, Addison Carvajal and Paige Pfannenstiel stymied most of the forward progress. Lemal-Brown scored twice in the second half while Lizi Mills also added a try. Cristina Lima and Kendall Schutzer added conversion kicks to round out the scoring for Bowdoin.
