Softball Drops First Games of the Season on Friday

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Bowdoin softball team suffered its first two losses of the season on Friday in Florida.

The Polar Bears dropped an 8-4 decision to Keene State and lost 13-5 to Ripon to fall to 4-2 on the season.

In the morning loss to Keene, Bowdoin surrendered eight unearned runs over the final three innings before mounting a late rally that fell short. Gen Barlow had a bases-clearing double that scored three runs in the seventh. Toni DaCampo reached base three times - all on walks. Melissa DellaTorre took the loss despite striking out eight batters and allowing no earned runs.

Ripon finished off Bowdoin in five innings in the nightcap as the Polar Bears were victimized by five more errors in the loss. Dimitria Spathakis had two hits and two RBI, including a triple, to lead the Bowdoin offense. Nicole Nelson also had two hits, including a double. Tricia Thibodeau allowed four earned runs in 3.0 innings with four strikeouts in the loss.

The Polar Bears will have an off-day on Saturday before returning to action against William Paterson and UMass-Boston on Sunday.
