Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine - Beau Breton lifted a walk-off hit to right field, scoring pinch runner Jon Fraser to cap a wild 9-8, ten-inning win for the Bowdoin baseball team against Suffolk on Sunday afternoon.
The Polar Bears close out their regular season with a record of 23-16. Bowdoin will begin play at the NESCAC Tournament Friday against Amherst at Wesleyan University. The Rams stand at 20-23 this spring with the loss.
The teams traded four-run sixth-innings to turn the contest from a pitcher's duel into a slugfest. Suffolk grabbed its first lead of the game in the sixth as two Polar Bear errors aided their rally. Bowdoin quickly answered in the bottom of the frame to reclaim the lead on a two-run triple by Tim McGarry and a Danny Findley single to take an 8-7 edge.
Bowdoin carried its lead into the ninth where Jake Cintolo ripped a two-out double to right center that plated Devan Jones with the tying run to force extra frames. The Polar Bears earned the win in the bottom of the tenth as pinch hitter Oliver Van Zant singled to deep short and was replaced by Fraser at first. An attempted pick-off throw by pitcher Jonathan Richard sailed wide of first and out of play, allowing Fraser to advance to third. Moments later, with the infield and outfield pulled in, Breton lifted a long fly to right that sailed over the head of the Suffolk player, allowing Fraser to walk home with the winning run.
Dan Findley led Bowdoin with three hits on the afternoon while Tim McGarry reached base four times. Cintolo led the Rams with a pair of hits, including a double. Bowdoin starter Erik Jacobsen got a no-decision after five innings, allowing one earned run and striking out six. Jhonneris Mendez took a no-decision for the Rams, permitting eight runs, but only one earned while striking out four. Henry Van Zant took the win in relief with three innings and one earned run. Richard took the loss for Suffolk, tossing 2.1 innings and allowing the one unearned game-winning run.
