AMHERST, Mass. - After a three hour delay, torrential rain finally washed out the final day of the 2011 NESCAC Baseball Championship on Sunday, cutting short the conference final between Tufts and Bowdoin. The Jumbos, by virtue of their 2-0 mark heading into the final day of competition, were awarded their second consecutive conference crown and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Polar Bears, who went 2-1 in tournament, sit at 24-14 overall on the year and will wait to hear about a possible at-large bid.
Tufts (26-7-1) won its tournament opener against Middlebury College 14-2 on Friday afternoon, before defeating the Polar Bears 4-2 in Saturday's 12-inning affair. Bowdoin's two wins came against host Amherst College, 9-8 on Friday and 6-5 on Saturday afternoon. It marks the second-straight year that Bowdoin has finished as the NESCAC runner-up.
