Polar Bears Return to Action, Fall in Pair of Regional Contests

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Bowdoin College softball team returned to action with a pair of hotly-contested regional games against Eastern Connecticut and Wellesley on Monday afternoon in Florida. The Polar Bears dropped a 1-0 decision to Eastern Conn, the #3 team in Division III, and fell 4-2 to Wellesley.

In a pitcher's duel between two of the top hurlers in New England, Eastern Connecticut's Molly Rathbun held Bowdoin hitless for six innings and had a first-inning RBI double to lead the Warriors to victory. Kara Nilan nearly matched her counterpart by allowing just the single run over seven innings while striking out 12 and permitting just five hits. Caroline Dewar had the lone hit for the Polar Bears in the loss.

The Polar Bears couldn't bounce back in the afternoon contest against Wellesley, as Lauren Goldfarb stymied Bowdoin by scattering seven hits and striking out eight for the Blue. Melissa DellaTorre took the loss in the circle, allowing just six hits over six innings. Dewar had two more hits, including a double, and first-year Casey Correa went 2-3 with a double and RBI for the Polar Bears.

Bowdoin stands at 4-6 overall this spring and will return to action with two more contests on Tuesday against Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Plymouth State.
