MANCHESTER, N.H. - Tim McGarry scored the go-ahead goal with 3:24 remaining as the Bowdoin College men's ice hockey team scored four power play goals in a 6-5 win over Saint Anselm College on Friday evening. With the win, the 12th-ranked Polar Bears improve to 14-7-1 (10-7-1 NESCAC) and need a Saturday victory against New England College, combined with a Williams loss to Skidmore, to clinch a NESCAC Quarterfinal home game next Saturday.
Colin Downey scored a pair of goals for Bowdoin while Jay Livermore added a goal and an assist. Kyle Shearer-Hardy, Owen Smith and Daniel Weiniger each had a pair of assists for the Polar Bears.
Three times over the first two periods, the host Hawks took a one-goal lead, only to see the Polar Bears tied the game on each occasion. The Polar Bears took their first lead of the game at 6:43 of the third period when Aaron O'Callahan found the back of the net for a 4-3 lead, only to see Saint Anselm tie the game just over two minutes later.
McGarry converted the go-ahead goal off assists from Shearer-Hardy and Weiniger. Downey added an empty-netter with 1:10 remaining to seal the win. Rob MacGregor also scored for the Polar Bears while Steve Messina made 30 saves.
