Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine - Kathryn Nathan converted a penalty kick 1:38 into the second overtime to give the eight-ranked Amherst women's soccer team a 2-1 victory at Bowdoin on Sunday afternoon. The unbeaten Jeffs improve to 10-0-0 (7-0-0 NESCAC) this season while the Polar Bears (5-4-3, 1-4-3 NESCAC) lose their fourth overtime game this fall.
In the defeat, Bowdoin's Ellery Gould scored her 10th goal of the season, upping her career points total to 95 and setting a new program record. Through 56 career games, Gould has a school-record 42 goals, 11 assists and school-record 95 points, breaking the mark formerly held by Ann (Zeigler) Unger '08.
Amherst broke into the scoring column at 13:02 when Sarah Duffy crossed the ball into the box to an unmarked Mel Stier, who put home the game's first goal to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Gould answered for Bowdoin after intermission as the senior co-captain accepted a pass from Nicole Fossi and crossed the 18, blasting a shot to the lower right corner to deadlock the contest at 53:57.
Following a scoreless first overtime, Amherst drew a foul in the Bowdoin defensive box following a corner kick just moments into the second extra session. Nathan coolly stepped up and ripped a shot to the top-left corner, past a valiant diving effort by Bowdoin keeper Maddie Lane to give Amherst the win.
Lane stopped 11 shots in goal for Bowdoin while Allie Horwitz made four stops for the Jeffs.
