GORHAM, Maine - After five straight games decided by one or zero
goals to open the season, the Bowdoin College women's soccer team
was finally able to find some breathing room on Wednesday afternoon
in a 5-1 win at the University of Southern Maine. First-year Lauren Skerritt scored her first two collegiate goals as the Polar Bears
improved to 3-2-1 overall.
Ellery Gould got the Polar Bears going with her fourth goal of the
season, a 15-yard shot in the 14th minute, to give the Polar Bears
a 1-0 lead that they would carry into the second half. Skerritt
found the back of the net with a put-back off a Gould shot at 65:45
before a late flurry put the contest out of reach.
Casey Blossom found the back of the net at 80:41 and Morgan Woodhouse set up a Skerritt header less than a minute later to make
it a four-goal game. Heidi DeHaan scored just seconds later for
Southern Maine, at 81:50, before Woodhouse rounded out the scoring
at 85:06 with her first collegiate tally.
Kat Flaherty made one save for the Polar Bears. Kat Rothe was
forced to make eight stops for the Huskies.
The string of five-consecutive games decided by one or fewer goals
was one shy of the program's longest such streak set by the 1993
team. Bowdoin remained unbeaten all-time against the Huskies,
improving to 25-0-1 dating back to 1985.
