MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Annie Rowell scored just 1:06 into overtime to
lift Middlebury to a 2-1 victory over Bowdoin in a NESCAC match-up
Saturday on Kohn Field. The Polar Bears, who played their fifth
game decided by one or fewer this season, fall to 2-2-1 with the
loss.
Nora Tomlinson-Weintraub gave Middlebury a 1-0 lead 12:32 into the
game, scoring with a blast from 20 yards out that tucked inside the
left post. The Panthers had another chance late in the half when
Julie Favorito's shot was tipped by Bowdoin keeper Kat Flaherty (4 saves), but Amy Schlueter's follow just missed
the net.
Bowdoin turned up the pressure in the second half, with Middlebury
keeper Lauryn Torch (3 saves) keeping the lead intact. Torch made a
save on Ellery Gould before winning a race to the ball with Molly Duffy. The Polar Bears tied the game with just 8:50 remaining, when
Casey Blossom's initial save was deflected by Torch, but
Gould was there for the rebound, heading the ball in for her third
of the season.
Neither team could score through the end of regulation, forcing
the game into overtime. Rowell's game-winner began with a
free kick from Katie Ruymann at midfield. Scarlett Kirk headed the
ball towards the goal, before it was cleared out by a defender.
Caroline Downer then crossed a ball that was just out of
Flaherty's reach, as Rowell quickly found the back of the
net.
Bowdoin will return to action on Wednesday afternoon at Southern
Maine.
