LEWISTON, Maine - Bowdoin's Toni DaCampo finished off a
scramble in front of the net with 2:42 remaining in overtime to
give the Polar Bear women's soccer team a key 2-1 NESCAC victory
over Bates on Saturday afternoon. The Polar Bears, playing their
third one-goal game in as many outings, improve to 2-1-0 (1-1-0
NESCAC) while the Bobcats fall for the first time this season and
stand at 1-1-1 (1-1-1 NESCAC).
The game was scoreless at halftime, but Bowdoin took a 1-0 lead
early in the second half, when Gould sent a direct kick past Bates
goalie Annie Burns with 36:39 left in the period. It was the first
goal let in by Burns this season, following 253 shutout minutes to
start the year. Bates evened the game at 1-1 in the 72nd minute of
play. Sophomore Sam Rose sent a through ball to first-year Jaimie
Cappucci, who converted her first collegiate goal from eight yards
out.
With just under three minutes left in the first overtime, Bowdoin's
Ellery Gould sent a
cross from the left side of the box to set up the game-winner.
DaCampo got a foot on the ball from about six yards away from the
face of the goal and poked it into the right side of the goal to
end the game. The Polar Bears, who dropped 2-1 to Amherst to open
their season last Saturday, have now claimed consecutive thrilling
2-1 wins over Husson and Bates in the span of four days.
Burns was credited with six saves for Bates, while Bowdoin goalie
Kat Flaherty made
four saves. The Polar Bears outshot the Bobcats by a 19-13 margin,
including a 12-4 difference in the first half. Bates outshot
Bowdoin 9-7 after halftime.
