BRUNSWICK, Maine - A pair of goals by first-years lifted the
Amherst College women's soccer team to a 2-1 comeback win over
Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon. The 20th-ranked Jeffs
received second half goals from Amanda Brisco and Kate Sisk to drop
the Polar Bears in the season-opening contest for both teams. Ellery Gould scored
Bowdoin's lone goal in the loss.
The Polar Bears controlled the pace of play in the opening half
and were rewarded when a run down the left side by Christina Aceto resulted in a
loose ball in front of the cage. Gould knocked home the loose ball
to give Bowdoin a 1-0 lead that they would carry into
intermission.
Amanda Brisco evened things for the Jeffs in the 53rd minute,
after Amherst controlled the ball following a corner kick. Bowdoin
netminder Kat
Flaherty appeared to get a piece of Brisco's shot, which
trickled over the end line to tie the score at one apiece.
The Jeffs continued to up the pressure late in the game and were
rewarded with senior Claire Galiette's first career goal at 76:55.
Allie Horwitz made things stand for Amherst, stopping 12 shots in
the victory. Flaherty ended with seven saves in the loss.
