LEWISTON, Maine - The Bowdoin College softball team reached 30
victories for the first time in program history and will make their
first NESCAC Tournament appearance since 2004 after sweeping Bates
on Saturday in Lewiston, 9-3 and 7-5. The Polar Bears (30-10, 9-3)
finish in second place in the NESCAC East Division and will play at
Williams, the NESCAC West Division's top seed, on Friday, May 7 at
2:30 p.m. in the opening round of the tourney.
Bates (4-24, 0-12 NESCAC East) endured another tough-to-swallow
loss in game two as the Bobcats led 5-1 going into the seventh
inning, but Bowdoin staged a four-run rally, keyed by a pinch-hit,
two-run double by Molly Nestor and an RBI single by Hillary
Smyth.
Both teams went scoreless in the first two extra innings, but
Bowdoin broke the tie in the top of the 10th. Caroline Dewar was
placed on second to start the inning, and Clare Ronan drove her
home with a two-run home run. Bates was unable to counter with any
runs in the bottom of the inning.
Caroline Gattuso (2-13) pitched all 10 innings in accepting the
loss in Game 2.
Julia Jacobs (12-5) earned the win, pitching 6.2 shutout innings
in relief of starter Tricia Thibodeau.
Mary Lewis went 4-for-5 with four infield singles in Game 2;
Maciejewski was 3-for-5, and Lauren Dobish was 2-for-6. Shavonne
Lord and Gen Barlow were both 2-for-5 for Bowdoin.
Three players went 2-for-4 in Game 1 for Bowdoin, including Clare
Ronan, who hit her third homer of the season, a leadoff shot in the
third.
