FARMINGTON, Maine - Kara Nilan tossed six innings of one-hit
ball in a 1-0 opening win and the Polar Bears rallied for a 6-4
victory in the nightcap as Bowdoin College spoiled the University
of Maine at Farmington softball team's season opener this afternoon
at Prescott Field. The Polar Bears improved to 16-7 with Brandeis
at home on Sunday for a 1 p.m. twinbill.
In the opener, Nilan walked two and struck out seven on the mound
and also collected a pair of singles. Julia Jacobs picking up the
save with a walk and two strikeouts. Jacobs was originally
scheduled to start the game, but arrived late with Nilan filling in
splendidly. Farmington starter Jess Timmreck scattered six hits,
while allowing one unearned run. Timmreck walked two and struck out
one.
Hillary Smyth doubled home Lauren Coven in the second inning for
the lone Bowdoin run. Coven reached and advanced on a pair of
Farmington errors. Nilan held the Beavers hitless until a bunt
single by Timmreck in the sixth inning. Shannon Mitchell and Sam
Morency each rapped a single in the seventh with one out, but
Jacobs retired the final two batters to close out the win.
In game two, Gen Barlow smacked a solo home run and Shavonne Lord
clubbed an RBI double to break a 4-4 tie in the seventh to lift the
Polar Bears to the win. The Beavers led 3-1 after five innings, but
Bowdoin took advantage of four free passes in the sixth,
highlighted by a Smyth two-run two-bagger to take a 4-3 edge.
Farmington evened the game at 4-4 in the home half of the frame on
an RBI groundout by McKell Barnes, but Barlow led off the seventh
with a homer that deflected out off the leftfielder's glove. Clare
Ronan followed with a single, advanced on a fielder's choice and
scored on Lord's hit. Coven singled and doubled for Bowdoin with
Caroline Dewar also supplying a pair of hits.
Michelle Wells picked up the win with two innings of relief with
a walk and two strikeouts.
