FARMINGTON, Maine - Kara Nilan tossed six innings of one-hit ball in a 1-0 opening win and the Polar Bears rallied for a 6-4 victory in the nightcap as Bowdoin College spoiled the University of Maine at Farmington softball team's season opener this afternoon at Prescott Field. The Polar Bears improved to 16-7 with Brandeis at home on Sunday for a 1 p.m. twinbill.

In the opener, Nilan walked two and struck out seven on the mound and also collected a pair of singles. Julia Jacobs picking up the save with a walk and two strikeouts. Jacobs was originally scheduled to start the game, but arrived late with Nilan filling in splendidly. Farmington starter Jess Timmreck scattered six hits, while allowing one unearned run. Timmreck walked two and struck out one.

Hillary Smyth doubled home Lauren Coven in the second inning for the lone Bowdoin run. Coven reached and advanced on a pair of Farmington errors. Nilan held the Beavers hitless until a bunt single by Timmreck in the sixth inning. Shannon Mitchell and Sam Morency each rapped a single in the seventh with one out, but Jacobs retired the final two batters to close out the win.

In game two, Gen Barlow smacked a solo home run and Shavonne Lord clubbed an RBI double to break a 4-4 tie in the seventh to lift the Polar Bears to the win. The Beavers led 3-1 after five innings, but Bowdoin took advantage of four free passes in the sixth, highlighted by a Smyth two-run two-bagger to take a 4-3 edge.

Farmington evened the game at 4-4 in the home half of the frame on an RBI groundout by McKell Barnes, but Barlow led off the seventh with a homer that deflected out off the leftfielder's glove. Clare Ronan followed with a single, advanced on a fielder's choice and scored on Lord's hit. Coven singled and doubled for Bowdoin with Caroline Dewar also supplying a pair of hits.

Michelle Wells picked up the win with two innings of relief with a walk and two strikeouts.
