BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College softball team established
a new program record for single-season victories in a doubleheader
sweep of Trinity on Saturday afternoon. The Polar Bears (27-10, 6-3
NESCAC) also vault themselves into position for a berth in the
NESCAC playoffs entering the final week of the regular season.
Trinity falls to 19-10 (8-3 NESCAC) with the losses.
Bowdoin CF Hillary Smyth was the star of the opener, going 3-3
with three RBI and a game-saving throw in the dramatic final
inning. Smyth sparked a four-run outburst in the second inning with
her two-run triple and added a run-scoring single in the sixth as
Bowdoin carried a 6-3 lead into the final frame. Trinity mounted an
error-aided rally and drew within a single run, 6-5, with a runner
on third base and one out. Kerry McCarthy lifted a fly ball to
Smyth, who recorded the putout and unleashed a bullet to home,
nailing the potential game-tying score at the plate to clinch the
win.
Julia Jacobs got the win for Bowdoin by allowing three runs and
six hits over seven innings. Kara Nilan also had three hits in the
win for Bowdoin. Kristen Anderson took the loss for the Bantams
after tossing two innings and permitting four earned runs. Caroline
Blanchard had three hits to lead Trinity in the opener, while
Amelia Mostovoy had a home run in the loss.
Nilan was the story in game two, as Bowdoin surpassed the 2007
team's previous record of 26 single-season wins. Nilan allowed just
five hits, no runs and struck out four in the complete game
shutout. Bowdoin scored twice in the third and twice in the sixth
to seal the win. Shavonne Lord had three hits including an RBI
while Gen Barlow had two hits and an RBI. Trinity's Katherine
Stoltenberg had two hits against Nilan, while starting pitcher
Katherine Poulos scattered nine hits and allowed three earned runs
in the loss.
