BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Trinity College softball team squandered
an early five-run lead but recovered to score four times in the
seventh inning to take a 12-9 win over Bowdoin on Friday. The
Bantams improve to 19-8 (8-1 NESCAC) with the win while the Polar
Bears drop to 25-10 (4-3 NESCAC) with the setback.
Trinity's Katherine Stoltenberg had four hits, four RBI and a run
scored in the win while Kerry McCarthy and Caroline Blanchard had
three hits apiece. Bowdoin's Gen Barlow paced the Polar Bears with
two hits and three RBI.
The Bantams appeared to be in control early as Patricia Cipicchio
blasted a three-run home run in the first inning to give the
visitors the lead. Trinity added two more runs on a Jessica Tait
triple and Stoltenberg single in the second.
Bowdoin battled back, scoring three runs in the fourth on a pair
of wild pitches and a Barlow single. After Trinity scored two more
runs in the fifth to gain a 7-3 lead, the Polar Bears rallied for
four runs in the bottom of the frame to tie the contest. Shavonne
Lord sparked the rally with a run-scoring double while Clare Ronan,
Amy Hackett and Gen Barlow also had run-scoring hits.
The teams traded single runs in the sixth before the Bantams
exploded for a four-run, two-out rally in the top of the seventh.
With the bases loaded, Tait drew a walk to score the go-ahead run.
Stoltenberg then laced a two-run single followed by a Blanchard hit
to give the Bantams an insurmountable lead.
Kristen Anderson earned the win in relief for Trinity, tossing 2.1
innings and allowing two earned runs. Julia Jacobs took the loss in
relief for the Polar Bears after allowing three earned runs in 4.1
frames.
The teams will play a doubleheader at Pickard Field Saturday
beginning at noon.
