WATERVILLE, Maine - Clare Ronan smacked a double to drive in
Shavonne Lord in the top of the 10th inning to give the Bowdoin
College softball team a 5-4 win over Colby on Friday afternoon. The
Polar Bears improve to 21-9 overall this season (2-2 NESCAC). The
teams will play a rescheduled doubleheader on Sunday in Brunswick
beginning at 2:00 p.m.
With Lord placed on second to begin the 10th, Ronan led off with a
double to put Bowdoin up for good. Kara Nilan, who entered the game
in the ninth inning for the Polar Bears, had a 1-2-3 inning in the
bottom of the 10th to earn the win. Colby's Lauren Becker,
who came in for starter Brittany Tasi in the fifth inning, took the
loss.
The Mules (6-14, 0-4 NESCAC East) tied the game with two runs in
the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game to extra innings.
Colby's Barbara Santos had an RBI single to bring in Lindsay
Peterson to make it 4-3. Alyssa Lepore smacked an RBI single to
bring in Gillespie with the tying run, yet the Polar Bears forced
extra frames when Santos was thrown out at the plate by Bowdoin
center fielder Hillary Smyth to end the inning.
Lord had three hits and two RBI to lead the Polar Bears offense,
while Ronan finished with two doubles and a walk. Hackett also had
three hits and scored a pair of runs and teammate Lauren
Coven had an RBI double. The two teams were scheduled to play
a doubleheader at Bowdoin on Saturday, but those games were moved
to Sunday at 2 p.m. because of poor weather in the forecast.
