GAME TWO BOX SCORE
BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College softball team reached 20
wins for the fourth-straight season after sweeping the University
of Southern Maine on Wednesday afternoon. The Polar Bears rallied
in game one, 9-5, before taking a 6-4 win in a daylight-shortened
game two.
Bowdoin improves to 20-9 this season and reaches the 20-win
plateau for the fourth-straight season and seventh season overall.
Five of those years have come under current head coach Ryan
Sullivan. The Huskies fall to 5-21 this year with the losses.
The Polar Bears used a two-out five-run rally to take the win in
the opener. With runners on second and third thanks to a pair of
Southern Maine errors, Amy Hackett ripped an infield single that
deflected off the leg of Husky pitcher Sarah Deroche, plating both
runners to give Bowdoin a 6-5 lead. The Polar Bears would add three
more runs, highlighted by a Molly Nestor two-run double, to close
out the scoring.
Deroche went 5.2 innings and allowed just one earned run as the
Huskies committed six errors on the day. Julia Jacobs earned the
win in relief for Bowdoin after permitting one run in three
innings. Amy Hackett and Jamie Paul both reached base four times
for Bowdoin and had two RBI apiece while Lauren Coven had three
hits and two runs scored. Deroche had three hits for USM while
Heather Gilman collected two hits, including a home run.
Game two was shortened to six innings due to darkness, but Bowdoin
was forced to rally again after a pair of Southern Maine runs in
the first inning. The Polar Bears scored four times in the third
inning to take the lead for good, as Shavonne Lord delivered a
two-run single to spark the rally. Lord finished with three hits
and three RBI for the game while Kara Nilan collected three hits
and scored three runs. Katie Davis had two hits and an RBI for the
Huskies.
Tricia Thibodeau pitched 5.1 innings, allowing just two earned
runs for the win. Michelle Wells picked up the final two outs to
earn the save for Bowdoin. Alexandra Perdomo was tagged with the
loss for USM after permitting six earned runs over 5.0 innings.
