BIDDEFORD, Maine - Bowdoin pitcher Kara Nilan extended her
scoreless innings streak to 21 in a three-hit shutout in game two
to salvage a split of a softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon
at the University of New England. The Nor'easters took game one 5-4
before the Polar Bears bounced back in a 3-0 game two victory.
Bowdoin stands at 18-9 overall this season.
Nilan's strong performance in the circle was the story of game
two. She faced just three batters over the minimum while walking
none and striking out 11 to raise her record to 4-2 and come within
3.2 scoreless innings of the school record for consecutive shutout
frames.
The Polar Bears scored single runs in the first, sixth and seventh
innings. Senior Clare Ronan pushed the first run across with
a sacrifice fly. Junior Molly Nestor doubled Bowdoin's lead with an
RBI single, then Ronan made the score 3-0 with a bloop double that
dropped between three UNE fielders in short right field. Caroline
Dewar had two hits for the Polar Bears in the win.
The Nor'easters scored the game-winning run in the seventh inning
of game one with a wild pitch-aided rally. Pinch runner Beth Smith
scampered home from third on an errant delivery to give UNE a 5-4
victory. Bowdoin took advantage of six errors to score all of their
runs, with Amy Hackett delivering the lone RBI of the day for the
Polar Bears with a fifth-inning triple. Julia Jacobs took the loss
in the circle for Bowdoin. Amber Zablowsky earned her 10th win of
the season for UNE.
