BANGOR, Maine - Bowdoin's Hillary Smyth collected five hits, including four RBI and three runs scored, as the Polar Bear softball team swept Husson in their northern debut on Sunday. Bowdoin cruised to 9-2 win in the opener before taking an 8-0 decision in the nightcap to improve to 13-5 on the year.
Smyth got the Polar Bears going in game one, as she rapped a two-run double down the left field line to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. Gen Barlow extended the lead with a triple later in the frame. That proved to be all Bowdoin's pitchers would need, as Kaity Sanson went four innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs. Julia Jacobs got the win by pitching the final three frames as Bowdoin added runs in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh to seal the win. Smyth went 2-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI. Barlow had two hits, two runs and two RBI as well while Lauren Coven smacked a home run for the Polar Bears.
In game two, Tricia Thibodeau dominated in the circle, permitting just two hits in five innings while striking out five in an 8-0 shutout. The Polar Bears scored three times in the second inning on RBI's from Coven, Nestor and Smyth. Bowdoin added five runs in the sixth to secure the victory. Smyth had as many hits as Husson (3), including two doubles and two RBI. Barlow had two more hits, including another triple and RBI.
