AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Bowdoin College baseball team rallied
from a five-run deficit in the eighth inning to take a 10-9 win
over UMass-Boston in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon. The Polar
Bears have won six straight games and improve to 8-1 on the
season.
Trailing 8-3 entering the bottom of the eighth, Bowdoin got their
rally started with a one-out walk by Adam Marquit. Marquit scored
on a Reid Auger double and, followed a Dan Hicks double, Brendan
Garner laced a single through the left side to score both runners
and cut the lead to 8-6. Garner later scored on a fielder's choice
to make it 8-7 and, after Bowdoin loaded the bases, Tim McGarry and
Marquit took bases-loaded walks to give the Polar Bears a 9-8
lead.
The Beacons were able to recover with a run to tie the game in the
ninth, but Bowdoin won the game in the bottom of the tenth with a
two-out rally. Drew LoRusso walked and stole second. Marquit ripped
a single to center to win the game for the Polar Bears.
Garner led Bowdoin with a 3-5 effort including two runs and three
RBI. Auger and Gorman also had three hits while Marquit reached
base four times, including three walks.
Joe Pace got the start and no-decision for Bowdoin after going 5.2
innings and allowing four earned runs. R.J. Shea got the win in
relief after pitching a perfect tenth inning.
