CLERMONT, Fla. - The Bowdoin College softball team split a pair
of contests against regional foes Babson and Westfield State on
Thursday, defeating the Beavers 10-1 but dropping to the Owls 8-0.
The loss to Westfield is the first setback of the season for the
Polar Bears, who now stand at 5-1 overall this season.
Julia Jacobs allowed just four hits and struck out two batters to
earn the win against Babson. Bowdoin mercy-ruled the Beavers with
an authoritative offense, sparked by Kara Nilan's 4-4 effort with a
double and three RBI and Hillary Smyth's 2-3 day with four RBI.
Caroline Dewar also collected three hits while the defensive
highlight of the game came courtesy of Smyth, who pegged a runner
at home with a nice block from Clare Ronan for the final out of the
game.
In the loss to Westfield, the Bowdoin bats were silenced for the
first time all season. Smyth had two of Bowdoin's four hits,
including a triple.
