BOX SCORE
BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Oswego State University men's
ice hockey team scored five times in the second period to pull away
from Bowdoin in a 9-2 NCAA Division III quarterfinal win on
Saturday night. The sixth-ranked Polar Bears finish a stellar
campaign with a record of 19-7-1 and their third NCAA Championship
appearance. The second-ranked Lakers (26-2-0) advance to Division
III semifinals next Friday in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Andrew Musselwhite scored four times for Oswego State while Hank
Vanboxmeer posted two goals and two assists for the Lakers. Mike
Corbelle and Rob MacGregor accounted for the Polar Bear goals.
Bowdoin drew first blood before a packed house at Oswego's
Campus Center Ice Arena, as Mike Corbelle snapped a shot from the
top of the circles that beat Laker goaltender Kyle Gunn-Taylor just
5:14 into the contest. Oswego bounced back moments later as a rush
up ice by Musselwhite beat a Bowdoin defender. Musselwhite tucked a
shot past Chris Rossi at 7:34 to tie the contest. After killing off
a 5x3 power play for the Polar Bears, Oswego's Vanboxmeer
ripped a shot that darted through traffic and past Rossi at 14:38
and gave the hosts a 2-1 edge at the end of the first period.
The nation's top scoring offense got going in the second
period, as the Lakers quickly took advantage of a pair of power
plays to extend their lead to 4-1. Vanboxmeer found the back of the
net at 4:28 of the frame before Musselwhite scored again at 7:34.
Brad Dormiedy added to the lead with an even-strength goal at 11:10
before Musselwhite completed the hat trick with a score at 17:47.
Justin Fox closed out the period with a score at 19:12.
Musselwhite added his fourth goal early in the final frame
before Rob MacGregor notched Bowdoin's second of the contest
at 10:49. Oswego's Tyler Leimbrock rounded out the scoring
with a goal at 12:50.
Gunn-Taylor stopped 21 shots for Oswego while Rossi stopped 17
shots, allowing five goals, before being relieved by Richard
Nerland, who stopped seven shots and allowed four goals.
