SALEM, Mass. - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team raced out to a 22-0 lead and cruised the rest of the way, defeating Lesley 89-45 in the consolation game of the SSU Tip-off Tournament Saturday afternoon at Twohig Gymnasium.
The Polar Bears (1-1) hit nine of their first 16 shots and forced 10 Lynx (0-3) turnovers in the early going. Lesley's first points came on a pair of free throws by Kaitlyn Wechsler at the 12:04 mark, and its' first field goal came by way of a Brianne Caira lay-in with 11:17 remaining. Amy Hackett and Colleen Sweeney drilled back-to-back three-pointers two minutes later, however, increasing Bowdoin's lead to 30-6. The Polar Bears entered the halftime locker room leading 46-19.
Lesley cut the margin to 21 early in the second half, but Bowdoin's pressure defense was too much, as the Polar Bears forced 31 turnovers. Bowdoin had five players score in double figures, led by junior forwards Nicole Coombes with 20 points and Alexa Barry with 15 points. Jill Henrikson was named to the All-Tournament team.
Lesley was paced by Wechsler who had 18.
