BRISTOL, R.I. – The Bowdoin College men's basketball team held off a late run by Roger Williams University to win 74-71 Saturday afternoon and earn the 2010 RWU/Courtyard by Marriott Tip-Off Championship. Bowdoin's Will Hanley, who was named Tournament MVP, finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, and two blocks.
Teammate Maximillian Staiger also earned all-tournament honors while going two points and four blocks. Justin Nowell scored 15 points and handed out two assists in the game. Roger Williams' Taylor Petruccelli finished with a game-high 26 points with ten rebounds en route to being named to the all-tournament team.
Roger Williams led for a majority of the game, taking a 40-34 lead into the break before the Polar Bears came back in the second half, eventually taking the lead on a three-pointer by Ryan O'Connell to make it 47-46 with 12:55 to play. The Hawks took a brief one-point lead (53-52) at the 9:23 mark on four consecutive free throws before Bowdoin regained the advantage.
The Hawks had an opportunity to send the game into overtime in the final minute of the game. With 15 seconds to play, Petruccelli hit the first, but missed the back end of a double bonus free throw. Yet on the ensuing Bowdoin rebound, he was able to force a tie-up and regain possession for the Hawks. RWU was not able to get a three-point shot up, as a Hanley block and rebound in the paint solidified the win for Bowdoin.
