SALEM, Mass. - The Manhattanville women's basketball team erased an eight point deficit with 4:02 remaining to defeat the Bowdoin College Polar Bears 66-62 in the second game of the Salem State Tip-Off Tournament at Twohig Gymnasium on Friday evening. The Valiants (1-1) will play Salem State for the tournament championship tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 PM while Bowdoin faces Lesley College, which lost 63-35 to Salem State, in the consolation game at 2:00 PM.
Bowdoin (0-1) built a 59-51 lead on a jumper by Kaitlin Donahoe with just over four minutes remaining. However, Simona Gordon scored five straight points for Manhattanville to cut the lead to 59-53. Berenda Felder finally tied the game at 60 for the Valiants with a jumper at the 2:17 mark before Felder and Taylor Wilson iced the victory with a basket and two free throws to make the final 66-62.
Bowdoin, which trailed 32-29 at the half, shot only 16-of-24 from the free throw line and turned the ball over 16 times in the loss. Manhattanville's Wilson led all scorers in the game with 24 points, including a perfect seven-for-seven from the free throw line while Gordon chipped in 16 points and five rebounds.
In her first game back on the court after a season-ending injury early in 2009, Jill Henrickson added 17 points to lead Bowdoin and Donahoe posted 11 points and five rebounds for the Polar Bears. Alexa Barry just missed a double-double for Bowdoin with nine points and 11 rebounds.
