BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Wesleyan University women's soccer team
rallied from a two-goal deficit to stun Bowdoin 3-2 in a NESCAC
battle on Saturday afternoon. Thanks to a two-goal, one-assist
effort from Laura Kurash, the Cardinals earn their first conference
win of the season and improve to 2-3-3 (1-1-3 NESCAC) while the
Polar Bears (5-3-1, 2-3-1 NESCAC) see their three-match winning
streak snapped.
Bowdoin appeared to be in good shape after scoring the first two
goals of the contest. Reigning NESCAC Player of the Week Ellery
Gould notched her team-leading eighth goal of the season just 2:48
into the game and senior Christina Aceto doubled Bowdoin's lead
with her first tally of the season at 30:51 to propel the hosts to
a 2-0 advantage. Wesleyan cut into the lead before halftime as
Kurash was able to find the back of the net at 38:39 to make it a
2-1 game at intermission.
The Cardinals wasted little time taking over the lead early in the
second half. Kurash controlled the ball on the left wing and fed a
centering pass to Barrie Lindsay, who netted the ball to the
lower-right corner to deadlock the contest just 26 ticks into the
period. Just over three minutes later, Kurash received a pass in
the box from Kerry Doyle and booted the game-winner to the
lower-right corner.
Wesleyan, who held a 17-10 advantage in shots, got a pair of saves
from Kate Connolly-Smithwick. Kat Flaherty stopped nine shots for
the Polar Bears in the loss.
