BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team
cruised to victory over Salve Regina on Sunday, 73-46, to claim the
2010 Coastal Maine Classic crown with a perfect 2-0 mark over the
two-day tournament. The fourth-ranked Polar Bears stand at 9-0
overall this season while Salve Regina, who dropped both games at
the Classic this weekend, fall to 4-6 this year.
Bowdoin's Caitlin Hynes was named the Most Valuable Player of the
Classic and was joined on the All-Classic team by teammate Kaitlin
Donahoe. Salve's Lindsay Shorey, St. Joseph's Meghan Daigle and
Skidmore's Sharlyn Harper were also named to the squad.
On Sunday afternoon, the Seahawks were able to hang with the Polar
Bears for the first six minutes, and held an 11-10 lead after a
spinning lay-in by Erin Phillips. Bowdoin responded with a 10-0
run, sparked by a Donahoe three-pointer, and never trailed again.
Six consecutive points by the first-year point guard then keyed a
13-2 surge to close the first half, giving the hosts a 40-19 lead
at intermission. The Polar Bears extended their lead to as many as
34 points in the second half en route to victory.
Twelve different Bowdoin players scored in the game, including 24
from the bench. Three players reached double digits, led by
Donahoe, who finished with 16 points, six assists and three steals.
Hynes, who scored 22 in the tournament opener against Skidmore,
added 10 points and nine boards, while Leah Rubega netted 10 points
and 11 caroms. Shorey led all scorers with 19 and seven rebounds
for the Seahawks.
BRUNSWICK, Maine - Megan Gaugler and Sharlyn Harper scored 16
points apiece to lead the Skidmore College women's basketball team
to a 60-49 win over St. Joseph's (Maine) College on Sunday at the
Coastal Maine Classic hosted by Bowdoin College. Both teams finish
the weekend with a 1-1 record as Skidmore improves to 7-1 overall.
St. Joseph's falls to 6-5 with the setback.
The Thoroughbreds took the lead four minutes into Sunday's game
and did not trail for the remainder of the contest. Skidmore
carried a 32-26 lead into intermission thanks to a trio of
first-half three-pointers from Gaugler. St. Joe's was able to cut
the lead to a single point on two occasions early in the second
period, but could never tie or take the lead down the stretch.
Despite being outrebounded by St. Joseph's, 30-26, Skidmore was
able to force 24 turnovers and collect 13 steals in the victory.
The Thoroughbreds also hit eight three-pointers in the contest.
Gaugler had four steals in addition to her 16 points for Skidmore.
The Monks were led by 15 points from Ashley Geel and 13 from Daigle
in the loss.
