BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's ice
hockey team scored four times in the second period on their way to
a 6-3 non-conference victory over Salem State on Tuesday evening.
The Polar Bears, winners of four straight, improve to 11-4-0 this
season. The Vikings are winless in their last four games (0-3-1)
and stand at 7-7-2 this season.
Salem broke into the scoring column at 7:06 when Matt Johnson
threw a shot on goal that slipped under the pads of Bowdoin's
Connor Shannon and crept just over the goal line for a 1-0 Viking
lead. Bowdoin evened the score at 14:13 when Robert Toczylowski
found Jordan Lalor with a cross-ice pass to set up a laser to the
top right corner. Colin MacCormack gave Bowdoin the lead with 26
seconds left in the period, banging home a rebound to give the
hosts a 2-1 edge after 20 minutes.
The Polar Bears opened the second period with another tally, as
MacCormack fed a perfectly-placed pass to Graham Sisson on the back
post for a one-timer at 2:08. The Polar Bears followed it up with a
pair of first career goals, as Trent Blossom pounced on a rebound
at 5:18 and Rob MacGregor did the same at 8:01 to increase the lead
to 5-1. Salem cut into the Polar Bear lead at 12:09 when Justin Roy
found the back of the net. Exactly two minutes later, Bowdoin got
the goal back as Kyle Shearer-Hardy circled in the zone, fed
Brendan Reich for a one-timer that was initially saved by Sam
Avoine, but deflected to the waiting stick of Jeff Fanning, who
knocked home the loose puck for a 6-2 advantage. The Vikings were
able to rebound with under four minutes left in the stanza, as Mike
Genovese beat Bowdoin's Connor Shannon at 16:27 to make it
6-3 Polar Bears.
Shannon made 25 saves in net for Bowdoin, allowing three goals in
40 minutes of play before being relieved by Chris Rossi, who
stopped seven shots and allowed none in the third period. Sam
Avoine made 28 stops between the pipes for Salem. MacCormack and
Sisson finished with a goal and an assist apiece for Bowdoin, while
Reich and Shearer-Hardy each had three assists on the evening.
