BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin head coach Ryan Sullivan became the
first coach in Polar Bear softball history to surpass 100 victories
in a sweep of Maine-Farmington on Thursday afternoon. The Polar
Bears cruised to a 6-0 win in the opener before taking a 4-3 win in
the nightcap. Bowdoin stands at 15-10 overall this season as the
Beavers fall to 1-5.
Already the winningest coach in program history, Sullivan holds a
101-72 record in his five seasons at the helm.
Julia Jacobs dominated game one in the circle for the Polar
Bears, holding the Beavers to just two hits while striking out nine
in the shutout. Bowdoin took advantage of three key errors by
Maine-Farmington to spark the offense as the Polar Bears used a
three-run third inning to create some distance. Ali Coleman had a
pair of doubles for Bowdoin while Caroline Dewar and Amy Hackett
had two hits and two runs scored apiece.
In game two, first-year Hillary Smyth delivered the big blow for
Bowdoin, crushing a three-run home run in the second inning to give
the hosts a 4-0 lead. The Polar Bears were able to hold off a late
rally by Farmington, who plated a run in the fourth and two more in
the sixth to close the gap to 4-3. Michelle Wells closed the door
for Bowdoin, however, earning the save with 1.2 innings of relief,
allowing just one hit. Courtney Colantuno got the win for the Polar
Bears.
