BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College softball team defeated
the University of New England 5-4 in non-conference action at
Pickard Field on Wednesday afternoon. A scheduled doubleheader, the
second game was canceled due to rain. With the victory, Bowdoin
(20-15-1) reaches the 20-win plateau for the third-straight season,
the longest stretch in program history. The Nor'easters fall to
19-11-1 with the defeat.
Courtney Colantuno (4-0) earned her fourth win of the season in
the circle and belted a two-run home run in the second inning to
give the hosts a 2-1 advantage. UNE bounced back with a pair of
unearned runs in the third, courtesy of run-scoring double by Megan
Gaedje, who later came home on a wild pitch to give the Nor'easters
a 3-2 advantage.
Bowdoin replied with two runs in the bottom of the frame as Clare
Ronan doubled and came home on an RBI double by Alison Coleman.
Lauren Coven rapped a run-scoring single that gave Bowdoin the lead
for good. Ali Coleman drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the
sixth to give the Polar Bears some insurance. It proved valuable,
as UNE plated a single run in the final inning when Julie Monteiro
earned an RBI single. Monteiro was stranded at second as Bowdoin's
Julia Jacobs got Gaedje to ground to short to close out the
win.
Colantuno tossed four innings, allowing one hit and zero earned
runs while walking three and striking out three. Jacobs got the
save with three innings of relief, permitting three hits and one
earned run while whiffing three. Erin Lyons was charged with the
loss for UNE after allowing four earned runs over five innings
pitched.
