BRUNSWICK, Maine - Tufts University pitcher Lauren Gelmetti tossed
a complete game two-hitter to lead the Jumbo softball team to their
30th win of the season on Friday afternoon, 5-0, over Bowdoin.
Tufts, ranked sixth nationally, remain the only unbeaten team in
Division III at 30-0 (10-0 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears fall to
19-13-1 (2-5 NESCAC).
Tufts got all the offense they would need in the second and third
frames, as a Lena Cantone single plated Cara Hovhanessian to give
the visitors a 1-0 lead in the second. A two-run home run to deep
left by Danielle Lopez pushed the Jumbo lead to 3-0 just an inning
later.
Julia Jacobs held Tufts in check for the next three innings, as
Bowdoin became just the sixth team to hold Tufts to five or fewer
runs this year. But Gelmetti did not allow a Polar Bear hit until
the sixth inning and the Jumbos got back-to-back run-scoring
doubles in the seventh from Christy Tinker and Maya Ripecky to seal
the win.
Gelmetti walked two and struck out seven in the victory while
Jacobs allowed four earned runs and whiffed three, scattering eight
hits.
