GORHAM, Maine – The Bowdoin College Polar Bears pounded out
19 hits, including nine for extra bases, to sweep the University of
Southern Maine Huskies 12-1 (5 innings) and 5-3 in a non-conference
softball doubleheader Wednesday evening at Towers Field in Gorham,
Maine. With the two wins, Bowdoin improves to 19-12-1 overall,
while the Huskies fall to 5-25.
Senior P Karen Reni scattered five hits over five innings in the
first game in a solid effort in the circle to lead the Polar Bears
in the first game. Reni was bolstered by two RBI a piece from
freshman 3B Courtney Colantuno, senior C Alison Coleman and
freshman SS Amy Hackett. Colantuno provided Bowdoin with power at
the plate finishing the opening game with a 3-for-4 effort with a
pair of doubles and three runs scored to compliment her two RBI,
while Hackett gave the Polar Bears an early 2-0 lead with a two-run
single to right center field in the top of the first. Reni was
solid in the circle for the Polar Bears, allowing just one earned
run in the bottom of the fifth. Reni struck out two batters and
yielded just one walk and did not allow the Huskies to string
together more than one hit until the fifth inning.
In the second game the Huskies struck first jumping out to a 2-0
lead in the bottom half of the first inning. Bowdoin quickly
regrouped and took the lead for good plating four runs in the top
of the second. The Polar Bears took advantage of four hits and two
USM errors in the inning as Hackett, junior IF Molly Nestor and
sophomore IF Lauren Coven each had a RBI. USM pulled to within one
run of Bowdoin in the bottom of the third, but the Polar Bear
pitching staff shut the door on the Huskies the rest of the way.
Bowdoin added an insurance run in the top of the fourth on a RBI
single by freshman OF Hillary Smyth.
Reni started the game for the Polar Bears firing three innings and
allowing two earned runs on five hits. Colantuno replaced Reni and
earned the win pitching three scoreless innings and allowing just
three hits. Freshman P Michelle Wells earned the save replacing
Colantuno in the seventh. Bowdoin hosts Tufts on Friday (4:00
p.m.).
