BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin and Bates softball teams split a
doubleheader on Saturday afternoon with a pair of shutouts. The
Polar Bears claimed game one 4-0 before the Bobcats rebounded to
take game two, 5-0. Bates wins the season series, 2-1, and improves
to 8-11 (5-4 NESCAC). Bowdoin stands at 16-12 (2-4) this
season.
Julia Jacobs was outstanding in the opener for Bowdoin, coming
within three outs of a no-hitter. Jacobs stymied the Bobcats for
the first six innings before Monica Berube slapped a single up the
middle to lead off the seventh frame. Bowdoin provided all the
offense they would need in the first inning on a run-scoring double
by Shavonne Lord. Jessica Paris had an RBI single in the second
while Lauren Coven, who reached base all three at-bats, drove home
Bowdoin's final run in the third. Kristen Finn took the loss for
the Bobcats after allowing five hits and three earned runs in six
innings.
Sarah Cullen quieted the Bowdoin bats in game two, scattering six
hits over seven innings for the shutout win. Bates scored three
times in the third as Stacia Saniuk came up with the bases loaded
and cleared the diamond with a three-run double to give the
visitors the lead. The Bobcats added two more runs in the fourth to
seal the victory. Jacobs took the loss in game two, allowing three
earned runs in three innings. Bowdoin was led by a pair of hits
from Amy Hackett, but the Polar Bears went 0-7 with runners in
scoring position in the loss.
