HARTFORD, Conn. – Trinity freshman Katherine Poulos pitched
12 total innings and allowed just a single unearned run while
recording two wins to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 9-1,
4-3 doubleheader sweep against the visiting Bowdoin College Polar
Bears in NESCAC East Division softball action this afternoon.
Trinity improves to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in the division, taking the
weekend's three-game series, 2-1. Bowdoin falls to 12-7
overall and 1-2 in the division.
Trinity scored in every inning of the first game, as junior OF
Jessica Tait led the way with two doubles, two runs, and two RBI.
Poulos allowed five hits and three walks with four strikeouts in a
five-inning, complete-game effort. Shavonne Lord had two hits for
the Polar Bears in the loss.
Bowdoin led, 3-1, after two frames of game two, as junior SS
Shavonne Lord highlighted a two-run second with an RBI double to
right field. Trinity sophomore 1B Nicole Nardella roped a two-run
homer to left-center field to tie the score at 3-3 in the bottom of
the fourth inning, and the game remained that way for the next four
frames. Bowdoin sophomore RHP Kara Nilan took the loss in relief
despite allowing one run in five innings pitched, while Lord and
freshman Caroline Dewar paced the Polar Bear offense with two hits
apiece. Trinity's Melanie Orphanos ripped a single between
shortstop and third base to score junior SS Patricia Cipicchio, who
had singled to open the bottom of the ninth, from second base for
the clinching run in extra innings.
