AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Bowdoin College baseball team was swept
by Worcester State on Sunday, dropping a pair of games 4-2 and 8-6.
The Polar Bears stand at 6-6 overall this season.
Bowdoin took a two-run lead in the first inning of game one,
thanks to an RBI single by Kevin Zikaras and a sac fly by Joe
Berte. The Lancers scraped together a run in the bottom of the
first and one in the bottom of the second to tie the game. The
contest remained tied until the bottom of the fifth when Worcester
took the lead on a bases loaded walk and an infield hit. Bowdoin
would not score again and dropped the 4-2 decision. The Polar Bears
could only muster three hits against the Lancer pitching staff and
Tim Welch took the loss for Bowdoin, going five innings and
allowing four earned runs.
Game two saw the Polar Bears squander a 3-1 lead heading into the
fifth inning, allowing seven runs over the final three frames to
fall, 8-6. Brett Gorman and Dan Hicks both homered for the Polar
Bears while Reid Auger had three hits. Luke Potter posted a strong
start, allowing two runs over four innings, but Bowdoin's relievers
permitted six runs, five hits and four walks over the final three
innings pitched. Hicks and Jason Koperniak each had two hits while
Zikaras took the loss in relief for Bowdoin.
