BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin's Richard Nerland made 28 saves in
Bowdoin's first shutout since February of 2008, leading the Polar
Bears to a 1-0 win over Skidmore on Friday evening. The win, which
is the first 1-0 victory for Bowdoin since 1993, improves the Polar
Bears to 4-0-0 this season while Skidmore drops to 3-3-0
overall.
Bowdoin's lone goal came in the first period as a cross-ice pass
from Robert Toczylowski set up Kyle Shearer-Hardy on the far post,
who wristed home the game-winning goal at 11:39. The Thoroughbreds
had a great chance to tie the score early in the second frame, when
Tim Daley one-timed a shot from just outside the crease that
Bowdoin's Richard Nerland was able to sweep aside. Later in the
frame, Nerland stopped a breakaway from Skidmore's Alex Radmin to
maintain the one-goal advantage after two periods.
Bowdoin's Daniel Weiniger almost gave the hosts a two-goal lead
early in the third, dragging the puck to set up a whistling wrist
shot that rang off the crossbar. Nerland stood tall in net,
however, sealing the victory with eight third-period saves. Colin
Bessey was outstanding as well, making 34 stops, including several
acrobatic saves, to keep the Thoroughbreds close.
Nerland made 28 saves in net, posting the first shutout for
Bowdoin since February of 2008 against Wesleyan. The last time the
Polar Bears prevailed in a 1-0 decision was on January 26, 1993
when Bowdoin took a 1-0 win over Colby College. Bowdoin Hall of
Honoree Charlie Gaffney scored the game's lone goal that evening
with Tom Sablak earning the win between the pipes.
