Second-Half Surge Pushes Women's Hoops Past Springfield

BOX SCORE

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team overwhelmed Springfield in the second half in an 88-60 season-opening win at the Eastern Connecticut Tip-Off Tournament on Friday. The seventh-ranked Polar Bears (1-0), who were led by 15 points from Caitlin Hynes, will play the host Warriors for the tourney crown Sunday at 3:00 p.m.

Bowdoin led by eight at intermission, 38-30, thanks to 48% first-half shooting from the field. However, the Pride stayed close and were able to trim the lead to five points on a Kelly Murphy three-pointer early in the second half.

The Polar Bears took over from there, outscoring Springfield 25-7 over an eight-minute span to open up a 25-point advantage. Bowdoin's defense forced 24 turnovers on 14 steals and out-rebounded the Pride by a lengthy margin, 39-26, including 15 offensive rebounds.

A balanced attack saw four Bowdoin players in double figures, led by 15 from Hynes. Kaitlin Donahoe, in her collegiate career, posted 13 points and three steals. Sabrina Cote had 11 while Jill Henrikson totaled 10. Bowdoin was 21-24 from the charity stripe for the game.

Murphy led Springfield with 14 points.
