BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Colby College women's soccer team snapped
a 38-game winless streak against Bowdoin College, getting a
first-half goal from Nikki Pickering and surviving a 45-minute
lightning delay to take a 1-0 win on Wednesday afternoon. The win
is the first-ever for the Colby women's soccer team against Bowdoin
in a series that dates back to 1979.
The Mules improve to 3-4-1 (1-3-1 NESCAC) with the win while the
Polar Bears fall to 4-4-0 (2-3-0 NESCAC) with the setback.
The game's lone goal came courtesy of Pickering, who received a
long pass from Julie Denison. Pickering slipped behind the defense,
beat Bowdoin netminder Kat Flaherty to the loose ball and ripped a
shot that deflected off the left post and into the net. Shortly
thereafter, a 45-minute delay due to lightning occurred, forcing
the teams to the locker room.
In dwindling daylight in the second half, Bowdoin had a pair of
good chances to even the score. The first came with 26 minutes
remaining when a long-ball brought Colby goaltender Loni Pisani out
of the box. Pisani beat Bowdoin's Casey Blossom to the ball,
deflecting it to the midfield. Molly Duffy's chance sailed wide of
the open net to keep the one-goal difference. The Polar Bears'
Ellery Gould had a solid chance with under 15 to go, but a nice
header attempt soared just high of the crossbar.
Pisani stopped six shots in the win for the Mules, who were 0-35-3
against Bowdoin heading into Wednesday's game. Flaherty made four
stops between the pipes for Bowdoin.
