Bowdoin Stifles Hamilton For Homecoming Victory

BOX SCORE

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College football team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 21-7 Homecoming Weekend victory over Hamilton College on Saturday afternoon. The Polar Bears (2-2) received a pair of interceptions and a touchdown run from Ian Vieira and also saw receiver Pat Noone establish a new single-season school record for receptions. The Continentals fall to 1-3 this season with the setback.

After a first quarter that saw three turnovers and a missed field goal by the teams, Bowdoin took control with a pair of second-quarter scores. Bowdoin marched 56 yards in five plays early in the period to paydirt. A long, 29-yard pass from Oliver Kell to Pat Noone set up the Polar Bears inside the Hamilton red zone and on the next play, Kell found first-year Jon Gren on a fade pattern to the back corner of the endzone to give Bowdoin a 7-0 lead. Later in the quarter, Bowdoin used a 10-play drive to cover 49 yards for a score. On fourth-and-one on the Hamilton 6, Kell handed to Vieira, who doubles as a short-yardage back, for a sweep to the left. Vieira burst through the hole and found the endzone to give the hosts a 14-0 lead with 4:08 remaining in the half.

Hamilton answered with a quick, six-play, 73-yard surge that was capped by a pair of nice throws by quarterback Lance Wilson. Wilson found Kevin Petrick for 19 yards down to the Bowdoin 24 and, on the next play, threaded a pass to the pylon for Ryan Cray from 19 yards to trim the lead to 14-7 at halftime.

The Polar Bears were able to get some insurance late in the third quarter after forcing Hamilton to punt from their own endzone. Noone returned the kick 37 yards down to the Hamilton 8. Two plays later, Kell tossed a bullet to Justin Starr, who made a fingertip catch and stayed inbounds to give the Polar Bears a 21-7 advantage. The Bowdoin defense held the line from there, blanking Hamilton and allowing just 121 yards of offense in the second half.

Hamilton's offense was led by Wilson, who went 13-35 with 168 yards passing and 20 yards rushing. Mark Snickenberger had 16 carries for 55 yards while Petrick finished with five catches and 71 yards. Defensively, John Lawrence had 10 tackles with Burke St. John collecting two sacks.

Kell went 28-44 for 272 yards and two touchdowns for Bowdoin. Justin Starr caught six balls for 111 yards while Noone finished with nine and 91, respectively. Nick Tom rushed for 55 yards for the Polar Bears. Noone's nine catches give him 42 receptions for the season, surpassing Bowdoin's single-season mark of 41 set by Bert Sciolla '84 in 1982. His 535 yards receiving this year move him into fifth place on the Polar Bears' single-season list.

Vieira, in addition to his rushing touchdown, intercepted two passes and made four tackles including a half-sack. Dan Evans made six tackles and a fumble recovery for Bowdoin, who snapped a three-game losing streak to the Continentals.
